What is the best way to light a staircase? 

To illuminate your staircase effectively for safety as well as ambience, we recommend a three-layered approach:

1. Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting serves as the primary light source. For a statement feature, install a chandelier or semi-flush ceiling light overhead, supported by sconces along the walls.

Placement: Position overhead lighting centrally above the stairwell. Mount wall sconces at eye level, spaced about six feet (1.8 meters) apart.

2. Task Low-Level Lighting

Add flush wall sconces or recessed lights near the treads (the flat part of each step). This clearly defines each step with a soft wash of light, reduces glare, and improves nighttime safety.

Placement: Install wall sconces 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) above each step or use integrated lights beneath the tread for a modern, floating effect.

3. Accent Lighting

Decorative sconces or picture lights add character and warmth to an area. They can spotlight portraits or architectural details and also serve as a style statement on their own.

Placement: Space decorative sconces around six feet (1.8 meters) apart for visual balance, including on the landing.  

Pro tip: Install light switches at both the top and bottom of the staircase for easy control, and use dimmers to adjust brightness throughout the day. 

What are the lighting requirements for stairwells? 

While no specific UK building regulations apply, best practice recommends that all steps should be clearly visible, with well-placed lighting and easy access to the switches.

What is the standard height for wall staircase lights?      

Mount wall sconces at eye level, typically 60–70 inches (150–180 cm) from the floor. Adjust mounting heights based on your ceiling height, stair angle and fixture size to ensure even illumination without glare or shadows.

Is LED lighting a good choice for indoor staircase wall lights? 

Yes, LED bulbs are an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor staircase lighting. The benefits of LED stair lights include: 

• Energy efficiency

• Longer lifespan than traditional bulbs

• Offer various colour temperatures

When it comes to colour temperature, choose warm white to neutral white (3000K–4000K) for balanced visibility and atmosphere.
